Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Junior Nurse Practitioner (Band 6) to join our busy Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at Newton Abbot Community Hospital. This is an excellent opportunity for a registered nurse with experience in Urgent Care, Emergency Department (ED), or Walk-in Centres (WIC) who is passionate about delivering high-quality, person-centred care.

As an autonomous practitioner, you will assess, diagnose, treat, and discharge patients of all ages presenting with minor injuries and illnesses. You will work collaboratively with senior clinicians and multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, evidence-based patient care while supporting service development and clinical excellence.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and discharge for adults and children attending the Urgent Treatment Centre

  • Deliver safe, effective, evidence-based nursing care

  • Work autonomously using nationally recognised assessment tools (e.g., NEWS, Sepsis Screening)

  • Use Patient Group Directions (PGDs) where appropriate

  • Refer patients to senior clinicians or specialist services when required

  • Identify and report clinical risks in line with governance standards

  • Promote patient health education and self-management strategies

  • Participate in local and national audits

  • Support service development and share best practice within the team


About the Role

The Urgent Treatment Centre operates 7 days a week, 365 days per year. You will work on a rotational shift pattern covering evenings, weekends, and bank holidays. The UTC manages a diverse patient population with minor injuries and acute illnesses and works closely with the local Emergency Department to reduce pressure on hospital services.

Essential Requirements

  • Valid NMC or HCPC Registration

  • Relevant clinical experience in WIC, ED, or UTC settings

  • Evidence of autonomous patient assessment

  • Ability to make clinical decisions using evidence-based practice


Desirable Skills

  • Minor injury and illness qualification/modules

  • Advanced clinical skills such as suturing, plastering, digital nerve blocks

  • Experience using Patient Group Directions (PGDs)

  • Evidence of autonomous clinical decision-making
